1984 Book 1 Ch 1-4

Book I Ch 1

Orwell dumps the reader directly into his dystopian Oceania (Britain) where the protagonist Winston Smith works as a government employee at the Ministry of Truth.  Ch 1 is a wide glimpse at the entire world presented in the novel, so careful reading (and re-reading) is encouraged. Ch 1 takes place in Winston's apartment at Victory Mansions, but through his mind's wanderings we are exposed to almost the entire picture.
